What’s in my gym bag?

The gym is my sanity. If I didn’t go to the gym I would probably be a total crazy person. Fitting the gym in some days can be a challenge so I have to have my gym bag stocked and ready to go at all times. I’ve compiled a list of my necessities to keep in my bag so if I want to stop at the gym on the way home from work I can.

1 // adidas Weekender Duffel Bag

I love this bag because first its super cute. Second, its very functional. I love how big it is so I can keep my spin shoes, hair stuff, supplements etc. There’s room for it all!

2 // PreWorkout from WM Nutrition

There are so many things about this PreWorkout that I love. It doesn’t make you jittery & can be taken in pixie stick form. I absolutely hate downing a bunch of water before a workout because it makes me feel sick. I’ve tried plenty of other pre workouts that also make you feel like your skin is crawling & this one does not do that at all. 2 things to note about this PreWorkout. 1 – it will melt & turn into goo if you leave it in your car. 2 – I prefer the regular PreWorkout the All-Natural is EXTREMELY SOUR.

3 // BCAA’s from Scivation

If you don’t know what BCAA’s are, they’re amino acids that help your muscles to recover quicker. It also has electrolytes to help replenish after getting your sweat on. These are by far my favorite that I’ve found so far (brand & flavor).

4 // Burt’s Bees Chapstick

This is the one thing in my bag that I cannot live without. If I don’t have moisturized lips I can’t function or focus on my workout because I become consumed with how dry my lips are. I have always been a believer in Burt’s Bees the texture is tacky which I love & it lasts thru a whole training session.

5 // Make-Up Wipes

I have this exact box which includes full sizes for at home & little travel sizes that are perfect for the gym! The last thing I enjoy doing is working out in a full face of make-up. You can also use them to freshen up post workout if you need to run to the grocery store or know you’re going to be delayed in washing the proof of your hard work off.

6 // Headphones

Pretty much a given in any gym bag is headphones. I like my beats, but they are actually an older model so this is the current version that’s out. I’ve had them for year & they have an amazing sound quality. I will say that I love to steal my moms AirPods whenever I get the change though.

7 // Wet Brush

Still obsessed with the Wet Brush. I have to talk myself out of buying a new one every time I see them in Target. They don’t hurt your head & work like a dream.

8 // Batiste Travel Size Dry Shampoo

Always have to have dry shampoo on hand to keep your hair lasting!

9 // Hair Ties

This one is pretty obvious if you have long hair.

10 // Cycling Shoes

I love these spin shoes I got from Pearl iZUMi. If you’re from Utah and you can make it into their outlet store they always have deals going on.

11 // Nike No-Show Socks

After one bad incident of forgetting socks at a post work gym session, I make sure I have an extra pair of these no-show socks.

12 // Redken Travel Size Hairspray

My favorite hairspray again is a given because nothing bothers my more than pieces of hair in my face as I struggle for oxygen.

H20 intake

Something I’ve changed up recently is my water intake! I’ve always been THE WORST when it comes to drinking water throughout the day. The only time I can remember drinking enough was at cheer camp because we were forced and it was HOT working in the sun all day.

The recommended amount depends on your weight, take your weight divided by 2 and that’s how many ounces you need to be drinking in a day. I account for my workouts and increase my water intake during vigorous workouts.

I know a lot of people say you’re “supposed” to drink a gallon a day regardless, but a lot of your water actually comes from your food. I promise your body will get used to it and you won’t be running to the bathroom every 5 seconds after a week.

The results I’ve seen just from one small simple change has made a huge impact on my energy, my skin, and strangely enough I feel like I definitely look leaner than I did before. Maybe not carrying as much water weight? Whatever the reason I’m not complaining one bit. I remember the first week I started this change I had text one of my gym friends that I felt like I could run a marathon after an 8 hour work day. I never thought I would be the person who could wake up at 5 AM and get to the gym before work but now I can sometimes make it. Lol. Better than never right?

15 facts about me!

My stats tell me everyday that more and more people read my blog, but I feel like many of you probably don’t know much of anything about me so I’ve made this post with 10 facts about me so you can get to know me personally better & we can connect more!

1. I have been on fire before (like legitimately).

It was my 8th birthday, picture tiny little Kennah leaning over to blow out her birthday candles and my hair catches on fire. TERRIFYING.

2. I hattteee milk & I’m the pickiest eater.

3. In pre-school for Halloween I was scooby-doo.

4. I got lost at the state fair.

Story time again. If you’ve ever been to the state fair you know its pretty big especially being a little kid. I was mesmerized by a wood carving station and I turned around and no one was in sight. My mom swears she was right there across the street in another store, but no she wasn’t. I immediately went into panic mode and thought I would get left behind never to see my family again. I found my way back to the car and sat there crying while watching fireworks for an hour while my family was inside searching for me. I finally saw my dad running out to me crying his eyes out and he picked me up and my sassy self was mad at everyone for leaving me.

5. I have a BIG family. 11 siblings. 4 parents. 8 grandparents.

6. I actually enjoy working out. It might sound crazy to some of you, but it took me a long time to get here!

7. I’ve struggled with anxiety pretty much my whole life. You can read more about it here on the post I made specifically sharing my story.

8. I have the biggest sweet tooth. Controlling it is SO HARD.

9. I’m afraid of deep open water.

10. My sisters and I LOVE scary movies & anything to do with creepy stuff or serial killers.

11. I competed in Miss Teen Utah at 17 & placed in the top 10. This is probably something I am most proud of because I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. No coach. No stylist. No make-up artist. No mommy & daddy to pay for everything. All while still going to school.

A lot of people have asked me when I’m doing Miss Utah and I always thought I would go back but I’m not sure if I will. I still think about it, but my goals have shifted a little bit.

12. I worked at Chick-Fil-A. First job and seriously the best job. It was so much fun even though I came home every night smelling like chicken.

13. I’ve had a blood transfusion.

14. My mind is 90% song lyrics. Ask me to rap for you next time we hangout.

15. I’m such a dreamer. I still believe there’s a chance my long lost grandma will show up and tell me I’m princess of Genovia.

Hopefully this helps you to get to know me a little bit better. I don’t want anything to come across over social media that I don’t have problems or struggles because I definitely do.

“The Advice Book”

I wanted to make a post about “The Advice Book” I made for my little sister for Christmas. It’s such a sweet & sentimental gift to give to someone you care about. I’m actually not that crafty when it comes to making presents like this, but this one was actually pretty easy. I bought a blank journal from Target and got to work. My opening page (which I cried writing) is pictured below to help give you an idea. I wrote lessons I have learned along the way about boys, self-confidence, money, friends and threw in some quotes that have stuck with me over the years.

Here are a few examples :

“Be content with the process & where you are. You may not be where you want to be one day, but you will get there. Don’t waste today wishing it was tomorrow because the time will pass you by.”

“When your heart hurts :
– Eat Ice Cream
– Go for a Drive
– Listen to Sad Songs
– Listen to Happy Songs
– Take a Bubble Bath
– Buy a new Outfit
– Play with a Puppy
– Take a Trip
– Have a Dance Party
– Re-Decorate
– Watch Me before You to remind you that your life isn’t THAT bad.
– Buy yourself flowers
– Spend time at the Gym
– Kiss a cute boy
– Cry with a friend”

“If it won’t matter to you in 1 year, let it go.”

“LOVE is not a reason to tolerate DISRESPECT.”

“Happiness is just a way of looking at life.”

“Growing up is a lot different than you think it is going to be. Don’t set unrealistically high expectations. Take things for what they are and just go with the flow. Life is so good & worth all the hard times you will go through.”

“You’re NOT a snack if everybody has a bite…. you’re a FREE sample!”

“Negativity in all forms will kill your happiness before anything else. Get rid of negative people & negative thoughts.”

“Credit cards will get you in trouble. PROCEED WITH CAUTION.”

“People can’t read your mind, you have to learn how to communicate your feelings in a nice way. AND it will be different with every boy you date or every family member/friend you have.”

“Assumptions make an (ASS) out of yo(U) & (ME). *if you’re confused it spells assume.”

“DON’T :
– Push away the people who care about you.
– Stop learning
– Rely on others for your own happiness
– Do anything that doesn’t make you happy
– Beg for anyone’s attention
– Stop until you’re proud”

Meal Prep : Energy Bites

For those of you who follow along on my Instagram for my blog @ninexxnine you probably already saw this recipe, but here is a solid copy that doesn’t disappear in 24 hours! I make these on Sunday for my week and eat them whenever I’m needing a little burst of energy. I love them before the gym or after work. The best thing about these little bites is that if you have a sweet tooth this will help satisfy that and it’s not bad for you!

You’ll need:

1 C. Old Fashion Oats

2/3 C. (Natural) Peanut Butter

1/3 C. Flaxseed Meal

2-3 TBS Honey

1/3 Chocolate Chips

Optional:

2 TBS Chia Seeds

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. *Note: if you decide to add the Chia seeds add a little extra honey so that everything still sticks together good when you’re making them into balls. Allow them to chill in the fridge for an hour. Scoop them into bite size pieces using a cookie scoop and store them in a tupperware container until you’re ready for them!

So easy and yummy! I made them for my boyfriend and now he asks me all the time to make more for him!

Workout Wear

One of my favorite ways to get myself motivated and excited about going to the gym is a new cute outfit to wear to the gym! I know it doesn’t last forever, but the new outfit will definitely get you through your rut. Here are a few of my favorite must-have workout items and some cute things I found on my favorite websites.

  1. Lululemon Pants Align II – Say what you will about the price, but these pants are seriously amazing and worth every penny. I purchased a few pairs from Victoria’s Secret and I hate them, they’re so tight and restricting I never wear them. I definitely would have been better off just buying another pair of the world’s softest workout pants. There is nothing that compares, it is like being naked. LW5LJFS_0001_3
  2. Marble Print Crop Top – I wear this top everywhere. It’s so cute and goes with black, white, pink, and grey bottoms. If you can’t tell, I like neutral colors. active-black-marble-print-zip-through-crop-top
  3. Adidas Tubulars – I cannot find the pair of tubulars I have anywhere online because I found them at a footlocker in Vegas, but I did find a cuuuteee pair of pale pink ones I’m dying over. 10efba40d34d3225961615af4dbea6ab
  4. Tie Back Tank – Yogi inspired tank that is perfect for all workouts. Perfect for glute day so you can check up on your booty gains. 687c8f394c268967e1e4a682b9da5195
  5. Cross Sports Bra – so edgy and cute, this sports bra is a win win because it’s only $16! active-black-cross-detail-wrap-around-crop-top
  6. Cropped Pink Tee – Loose, rolled sleeved plain tee. I have this is white and I wear it to the gym and with a pair of shorts and some sneaks on a regular basis. It’s so cute and easy plus its comfy but doesn’t look lazy. 8542d5577f314345ae4e8318bc4749eb

I hope this gives you a little bit of inspo to get you back in the gym and looking better than ever!

25 of My Favorite Healthy Snacks

You may not know that I actually love working out and semi-like eating healthy (joking, it makes my body feel so good and energized). I know it can be hard to get creative when you’re trying to be healthy and eating the same foods over and over is not fun! So I decided to share some of my favorite healthy snacks that I eat on a regular basis to help you stay on track throughout your summer!

  1. Energy Bites! You can find my favorite recipe for them here! (I add 1/3 C. of Chia Seeds).
  2. Frozen Grapes
  3. Light Babybell Cheese
  4. Strawberries (best time of year for them)
  5. Natural Peanut Butter & Celery
  6. Greek Yogurt Ranch & Veggies
  7. Cottage Cheese
  8. Bananas (frozen, with peanut butter, or plain)
  9. Protein Bars/Drinks (I love the Muscle Milk Pro Series in Chocolate, when picking a bar or drink be sure to check that there is substantially more protein than sugar.)
  10. Blueberry Lemon Protein Muffins (I substitute instead of using oil).
  11. Skinny Pop Popcorn
  12. Hummus & Veggies
  13. Lean Jerky (s/o to my dad for keeping me stocked up)
  14. Edamame
  15. Apple Slices
  16. Cashews (nuts in general are good for you)
  17. Mini 100-Calorie Guacamole packs
  18. Boiled Eggs
  19. Lemons (yes I am a freak I eat them plain)
  20. Greek Yogurt
  21. Pineapple Chunks
  22. Fresh Peaches
  23. Grapefruit
  24. Greek Yogurt
  25. My last is not actually that good for you but its not bad for you either and it’s my sweets for the day! Frozen Greek Yogurt Bars! I love the chocolate chip cookie dough ones.

Eating healthy is an important part of a beauty regimen! What you put into your body reflects in your hair and skin (breakouts, losing a lot of hair = unhealthy choices). If you didn’t know, now you know! Also if you have any yummy snack suggestions for me send them my way!

Travel Essentials

As you know I love to travel, I’m going on quite a few trips this spring/summer so I wanted to create a guide for my must-haves while traveling (in no specific order). If you have any must-haves for traveling you think I’d like please send them my way!

Comfort is a huge priority for me while traveling, but I also like to look cute not as if I just rolled out of bed. The Lululemon Align II Pants give me the best of both worlds. They are so comfy and feel like you’re not even wearing pants (that’s why they call them the naked pants) and they make you bum look nice! These are perfect for a long flight or drive because they’re not restricting at all. They’re a bit expensive, but I promise you’ll wear them everyday and it will be worth it.

LW5LJFS_028694_1

Next comfort item is cozy socks! It can get pretty cold on airplane’s or even a chilly hotel room at night. It’s always nice to have a soft pair of socks to help you get warm or just to put on at night after your shower.

I am overly cautious about getting too much sun and using sunscreen. I take good care of my skin and I never want wrinkles so I make sure I use my sunscreen frequently. For my face I use Tarteguard SPF 30 it doesn’t make me breakout like some of the others I have tried. For my body I use Sun Bum Sunscreen Lotion with SPF 30 as well (they make a spray version). It also smells tropical which I love. For my lips I use Sun Bum Sunscreen Lip Balm that is SPF 30. It also has aloe and Vitamin E to keep them soft and smooth. It comes in a few different flavors, but I love the banana one! (Ulta never has them in stock in-stores that tells you how popular they are, but they also have them at Target if they’re out!) I also bought the cutest sun hat from Nordstrom to help out with keeping my face out of the sun!

MEDICINE! Questionably the most important thing on this list. It’s always a good idea to take any medicines you think you may need with you. It would be tragic to be stuck in a foreign country with a language barrier and a stomach ache. This could be a life or death type of situation. (Zofran is also a life saver if you’re feeling nauseous). If you have a hard time sleeping in new environments try melatonin!

Sensibility! While traveling I don’t want to carry my big purse around or worry about an expensive bag being taken or something falling out during the hustle and bustle. I love to have a backpack to carry my stuff around in! It’s so conveinient and distributes weight more evenly than a purse which makes my back happy! I found a few super cute backpacks (one of which I used in disneyland and it was perfect!) and they’re all only $20!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Another sensible must-have for me is a passport holder! (If you’re going out of the country that is.) It keeps all your important things together: passport, money, and credit cards.

We can’t forget about BEAUTY essentials. Time changes and jet lag can be a killer for your sleep schedule. Nobody likes dark circles under their eyes or looking tired so thus my next essential: Under Eye Gel Patches. Send those under eye bags packing!

Dry Shampoo. Sometimes when you’re on the go so much, you don’t have time to wash, dry, and re-style your hair. This is where LUSH’s No Drought Dry Shampoo comes into play and saves the day! My favorite part about this dry shampoo is that it works well even on dark hair and adds volume (BONUS!).

Gadgets are a bare-necessity in today’s world. Headphones are perfect when it comes to air travel (especially when you want to tune out your snoring seat-mate). I’m a freak about quality head phones. You won’t see me with the cheap $15 headphones that hurt your ears. I’m all for comfort and quality when it comes to my music entertainment. I have a few pairs of Beats that I like to use and what’s better than wireless earphones that don’t tangle around everything?

Continuing with gadgets is a portable charger. If you’re like me you love to take photos and videos of everything while traveling, but it can get tricky when you’re on the go all day long looking up directions and places to eat. That’s why the TravelCard is perfect. It’s so thin you can actually fit it in your wallet and it gives you 5 hours of charge time!

TravelCard_Shopify_Photo_R_01_49dc9fad-1bd4-495d-b844-09e255b19120_large

Finally we have: a good book. It’s the perfect time killer while traveling. Have a layover or a long drive? Nothing passes time for me like reading and it just makes me feel as if I’m taking a piece of home with me.
